Geography is taught through topic work. Topics can be taught over three weeks or one term dependant on the topic. Topics are taught on a two year rolling cycle so every child visits each topic once. This also allows teachers to work together across year groups to support planning, resources and trips. Teaching Geography within topic means learning is delivered within a relevant context and builds on prior learning helping children make links and make progress. Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between geography and morning literacy lessons identified, planned for and utilised. The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice. Tunstead has a large green site with large Forest School that children regularly learn in and a wildlife garden. The school is also located in the heart of the farming community and the location is used well to develop local understanding for our children.
Outcomes in topic and literacy books, evidence a broad and balanced geography curriculum and demonstrate children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Children review their successes towards achieving the lesson objectives at the end of every session. Pupils assess what they know at the start of a topic and what they have learned by the end using strategies such as mind mapping. As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context.
